Rubber Soul, 1994
I specifically made this for exhibition-- TIME MACHINE at the British Museum. Tis' was a work with finite life because it contained a reptile in suspended animation. The wonders of the Canadian frog Rana sylvatica. It has a particular capability; when the winter freeze comes it freezes solid. Its heart stops. Its lung stops. And all the electrical impulses in its nerves system stop. It seems to be dead, and yet, when the thaw comes in spring, it wakes up and comes alive again. The wonders... the wonders... Nature, how complex. Within us, within our brain, lies something dormant... At the end the exhibition, I revived the frog and gave it to the London Zoo, where it now lives. The frog was not killed for the sculpture but provided an opportunity for the sculpture to pose the question: what is alive? what IS alive? in you, in me, in us. -- MQ |
